Visiting “Anyang Yinxu Ruins”

Yinxu is the site for the the last capital of China’s Shang Dynasty and is especially famous as the source of the archeological discovery of oracle bones and oracle bone script. The Yinxu archeological site is one of China’s oldest and largest. It was also the place of the earliest known Chinese writing. The best preserved of the Shang Dynasty royal tombs unearthed at Yinxu is the Tomb of Fu Hao. It was also the site for the largest number of Si Mu Wu Ding bronze vessels unearthed in the world. After nearly a hundred years of archaeological excavations, numerous Shang palaces, mausoleum tombs, burial pits, settlement sites, cemetery groups and handicraft sites have been discovered. Among these sites, oracle bones, bronze jade and other fine artifacts have been unearthed, which paints a comprehensive picture of the Chinese style displayed at the capital of the Shang dynasty 3000 years ago.

Deng Feng Observatory

The Henan Deng Feng Observatory located in Gaocheng Town, was built and used by Guo Shoujing to observe the movement of the sun, stars and record time. It is the oldest preserved observatory in China, and also one of the most important in the world.

The Observatory was able to measure when the Summer and Winter solstices, and Spring and Fall equinoxes would occur, thus setting apart the four seasons.

The monument “Middle of the world” designed by Cristobal Cobo is a sundial located on the equator in Ecuador. It bears a similar function to the gnomon used during the Zhou dynasty. A wooden pole measures shadows to mark the winter/summer solstice and the spring/fall equinoxes. This center also marks the origin of the "Eight Pointed Star”.
